Reading and browsing
You can read our questions without creating an account or providing an email address. Our hosting provider may process technical request information, such as IP addresses, to deliver and protect the website.
Optional analytics
With your permission, we use Google Analytics to understand visits to public pages and articles, clicks to download our free PDF, and clicks to Amazon and eBay. Our own analytics events use page paths without query strings and, when available, the referring website's origin without its path or query. We do not intentionally include visitor-supplied names, email addresses, free-text search terms, or submitted memories. Approved campaign identifiers may be kept for the current browser session after you opt in. Our affiliate-click events include the public page, link placement, and a broad article topic or journal ID; a click does not tell us whether a purchase happened. Google’s enhanced measurement, when enabled for our stream, may also record the destination URL of an outbound link.
Your privacy choice is stored in your browser. You can change it using “Privacy choices” in the footer. Declining leaves optional analytics off. Google’s handling of analytics data is described in Google’s privacy policy.
Optional Meta ad measurement
With a separate opt-in, we use the Meta Pixel and Conversions API to measure Amazon link clicks from our journals landing page. An earlier Google Analytics choice does not enable Meta. Meta receives the click event, a shared event identifier, the journals page address, a journal identifier and link placement, browser information, and Meta browser or ad-click identifiers when available. The Pixel may set Meta cookies and send information about your browser and the page address, including advertising click identifiers, to Meta. We do not send names, email addresses, or family memories with this event.
In Meta reporting, this Amazon link click is named “SubmitApplication.” It measures a link click and does not establish an application, purchase, or sale. You can decline or withdraw Meta measurement using “Privacy choices” in the footer while continuing to follow Amazon links. See Meta privacy policy for how Meta uses information.
Messages and memories
Memory submissions are currently unavailable. We do not currently offer an email newsletter sign-up. If you contact us by email, your email provider and ours handle that correspondence.
Affiliate links and other websites
Some Amazon and eBay links are affiliate links. We may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Those services operate independently and apply their own privacy policies when you follow a link. We do not currently show Google display ads; we would update this policy and privacy choices before adding them.
