The Ice Cream Van Jingle Down the Street

The tune came around the corner before the van did. It was thin, bright, and a little tinny, repeating over the sound of engines and birds. Children heard it through open windows or across back gardens. Someone would call out, and within a minute pockets were being checked for coins.

The van usually stopped near the same lamp post or at the end of a short row of houses. Its painted pictures promised soft-serve cones, orange ice lollies, and wrapped bars that had to be eaten before they bent in the heat. The queue formed without anybody organising it.

Adults noticed the van too. A parent might appear at the gate with a few coins, still wearing an apron or holding a dish towel. Older neighbours sometimes came out for a plain vanilla cone. The driver knew which children wanted sprinkles and who would spend ten minutes choosing between two flavours.

There was a small ceremony to the purchase. Coins went into a warm hand. The freezer lid lifted with a thump. A paper napkin was wrapped around the cone, never quite enough to catch the first drip. Then came the careful walk back, trying not to let a sibling take a lick.

The weekly visit belonged to a time when a treat could arrive without a plan. There was no phone alert and no shop aisle to walk down. The sound itself created the occasion, bringing children from separate houses into one short, excited line on the pavement.

Ice cream vans still appear in some places, but the old tune carries a particular kind of expectation. It recalls hot paths, loose change, impatient feet, and the brief feeling that an ordinary afternoon had been interrupted for a very good reason. When the van drove away, children stood licking their cones and watched it disappear toward the next street.
